We Tested Bottled Water vs. Our Filtered Water. Here’s What Happened.

We run a lot of water consultations here at Aqua Clear Water Solutions. And one of the most common things we hear from homeowners is some version of the same sentence: “I know filtered water is probably better, but I’ve just gotten used to buying bottles.”
So, we decided to put that habit to the test, not with marketing language, but with an actual comparison breakdown. Taste. Cost. Convenience. Here is what we found.
The Taste Test
We ran an informal blind taste test with filtered tap water from a Kinetico K5 reverse osmosis system and bottled water from three popular national brands commonly found on shelves across McAllen and the RGV.
The results were not surprising to us, but they tend to surprise the participants. Most testers could not reliably distinguish the filtered tap water from their preferred bottled brand. Several rated the filtered water as noticeably cleaner tasting, particularly when compared to water that had been sitting in plastic bottles for some time.
This tracks with what we know about how RO filtration works. A well-designed reverse osmosis system removes dissolved minerals, disinfection byproducts, and other contaminants that contribute to the flat or chemical aftertaste many people associate with tap water. What comes out of an RO tap is water with very few dissolved solids, which is also the profile that most premium bottled water brands are going for.
The Cost Comparison
This is where the numbers become difficult to ignore. A gallon of bottled water from a grocery store typically runs between $1.23 and $1.43, depending on the brand and where you buy it. For a household that consumes three to four gallons of drinking water per day — accounting for cooking, beverages, and direct consumption — that adds up to roughly $1,800 to $2,100 per year, depending on usage.
By comparison, filtered water produced by a reverse osmosis system typically costs somewhere between $0.05 and $0.10 per gallon, accounting for annual filter and membrane maintenance over the life of the system. For the same three to four gallons per day, that works out to roughly $55 to $150 per year.
The math is not complicated. A household spending $1,800 per year on bottled water and switching to a quality RO system can reasonably expect to break even in a matter of years and save substantially over the long term.
The Convenience Factor
Bottled water has one real advantage: it is already in your hand. But that convenience comes with costs that are easy to overlook:
- the trips to the store
- the storage space
- the recycling
- the weight.
A point-of-use RO system at the kitchen sink means filtered water is on demand, any time, at the turn of a faucet. Many Kinetico systems can be connected directly to your refrigerator’s water and ice line, so filtered water follows you throughout the kitchen without extra steps.
For businesses, the calculus shifts even more clearly. Bottleless water coolers connected to a building’s water line eliminate the logistics of managing water delivery, coordinating bottle returns, and storing heavy jugs. The water quality stays consistent, and there is no call to make when you run out.

What About the Plastic?
The environmental math on bottled water is not favorable. A typical household consuming three gallons of water per day in single-use plastic bottles generates hundreds of plastic bottles per year. While recycling exists, the reality is that plastic bottle recycling rates remain relatively low in the United States.
A home filtration system eliminates that waste stream entirely. If the environmental impact of bottled water is something your household thinks about, it is worth factoring into the comparison.
The Short Version
Filtered water from a quality RO system is comparable in taste to premium bottled water, costs a fraction of the price per gallon, and eliminates the logistics of buying, storing, and disposing of bottles. The upfront investment in a system is real, but so is the payback—and it comes sooner than most people expect.
